Cozaar® and Hyzaar® now available as generics!

Generic Name: losartan
Brand Name: Cozaar®

Drug class and uses: Losartan is in a class of medications called angiotensin receptor blockers, or ARBs. Losartan is used to treat high blood pressure. Teva Pharmaceuticals has FDA approval for marketing generic versions, while Sandoz will market a Merck-authorized generic version. Previously, Merck was the only manufacturer of these products, with U.S. sales of more than $690 million in 2008.

Brand Name: Hyzaar®

Drug class and uses: Losartan is in a class of medications called angiotensin receptor blockers, or ARBs. Hydrochlorothiazide is in a class of medications called thiazide diuretics. Alone or in combination, these medications are used to treat high blood pressure. Teva Pharmaceuticals has FDA approval for marketing the 50 mg/12.5 mg, 100 mg/12.5 mg, and 100 mg/25 mg strengths; while three other manufacturers received FDA approval to market the 100 mg/12.5 mg strength. Previously, Merck was the only manufacturer of this product, with U.S. sales of more than $528 million in 2008.
